Another sad day for All-American kids.

When Vanya Shivashankar, 13, spelled “scherenschnitte” correctly and Gokul Venkatachalam, 14, nailed “nunatak,” it meant the duo would share the title of 2015 Scripps Spelling Bee champion. It has now been 8 years since any European-American descendant has won an American Spelling Bee. Remember, these are the folks who created the English language. It seems kind of strange, doesn’t it? All this happened right in front of your eyes while your sons and daughters were sending emojis and misspelled words in text messages.

Not that spelling is all that important in today’s society. Honestly, it’s a waste of time. But it’s the work ethic of these children that needs to be studied. If they can perfectly memorize an inordinate amount of words they’ll never use, imagine what else they can accomplish.

My son is in intensive spelling training this summer. We’re going to show y’all how it’s done.
